Learning Journeys
We believe that every child is unique, capable, and full of potential. Our approach to early learning is guided by the four key principles that shape high-quality Early Years education:
- Every child is a unique individual, constantly learning and developing confidence, resilience, and independence.
- Children learn best through positive relationships that make them feel safe, valued, and supported.
- Learning flourishes in enabling environments that respond to individual needs and are built on strong partnerships between practitioners, parents, and carers.
- Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, and our approach reflects this individuality.

Our Learning Framework
During their time with us, children are developing new skills, gaining knowledge, and demonstrating understanding across the seven areas of learning and development set out in the Birth to 5 Matters framework.
We begin by focusing on the three prime areas, which form the foundation for future learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – helping children to build relationships, develop self-confidence, and manage feelings.
- Communication and Language – supporting listening, understanding, and early speech through stories, songs, and play.
- Physical Development – encouraging movement, coordination, and awareness of health and self-care.
As children grow, these prime areas support progress in Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. Our experienced practitioners use these areas to plan engaging, age-appropriate activities that reflect each child’s interests and learning style. The Birth to 5 Matters framework allows flexibility, ensuring every child’s learning journey is individually tailored and meaningful.
Learning Journeys
Each child has their own Learning Journey, which records their progress, achievements, and memorable moments throughout their time at nursery. Compiled by the child’s Key Person, this record includes photographs, written observations, artwork, and developmental summaries.
Progress summaries are completed every six months or when a child moves into a new room. Around the age of two, a detailed Two-Year Progress Check is shared with parents and the child’s health visitor. This identifies areas of strength and highlights any areas where additional support may be needed, ensuring continuity between nursery and home.
Working in Partnership with Parents
We know that children thrive when parents and practitioners work together. We actively encourage parents to be involved in their child’s learning, both within the nursery and at home. Our team is always happy to share ideas, resources, and information about the Birth to 5 Matters framework to help you continue your child’s development beyond the nursery setting.
Staff Learning
All of our staff are well trained. Children benefit from P.E. and music lessons led by qualified teachers. Our staff are trained in paediatric first aid. We continually encourage our staff to further their expertise and have a comprehensive CPD programme. Current staff are pursuing qualifications in safeguarding, SEND and Forest School.
